The Gardens was named #4 on this list by station WTTW! Forest Hills Gardens, located in Queens just nine miles from Manhattan, is presented as the nation’s first planned “garden suburb,” developed between 1909 and 1912. Designed by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. and featuring architecture primarily by Grosvenor Atterbury (often in Tudor Revival style), the neighborhood was intended to offer a mix of housing for different income levels with its own transportation hub, Station Square. Its design features include gently curving streets, landscaped parks, and a distinct aesthetic with signature red roofs, setting it apart from the surrounding city grid.
