Welcome to Spring…And Our New Community Newsletter

After a long winter, we’re so happy to welcome the warmer weather and the fresh start it brings. In that same spirit of new beginnings, we’re launching this quarterly newsletter to keep you connected to the Foundation’s work, updates, and projects happening right here in our community.

Here’s what we’ve been up to since we last checked in—there’s plenty of good news to celebrate!

A New Preservation Project is Underway!

We have partnered with the Forest Hills Gardens Corporation on an important preservation project that’s been in the planning stages for more than a year.

Many of the original blueprints for Garden homes—beautiful pieces of our neighborhood’s history—are stored in the Gardens Corp offices. These documents are delicate and need special care to ensure they last. To protect them for generations to come, the Foundation is helping to inventory and digitize the entire collection. This means our historic blueprints will be safely preserved and much easier to access in the future.

What makes this project even more special is that one of our very own Board members, Annemarie van Roessel, has generously volunteered her time and expertise to lead the effort. Annemarie is a professional archivist and curator at the New York Public Library and has built an impressive career at institutions such as Columbia University’s Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library and The Art Institute of Chicago. With studies at Wellesley College, the University of Chicago, and The Pratt Institute, she brings extraordinary knowledge to this work.

We couldn’t be prouder—or more grateful—to have Annemarie guiding this project. Her dedication ensures that an important part of our community’s story will be preserved with the care it deserves.

This is a meaningful moment for the Foundation, the Gardens Corp, and everyone who loves the history of Forest Hills Gardens. We can’t wait to share more updates as the project continues!

As many of you may know, the Foundation has undertaken a project to photograph and feature all the beautiful stained glass in Gardens’ homes. Since we started the project, we’ve collected photographs from almost 50 homes! Check out the collection here.

We know that there are many more homes that we have yet to capture. If you own a home in the Gardens with leaded or stained-glass windows, we would love the opportunity to photograph your windows.

Please
contact us to arrange a time for one of our volunteers to stop by, or if you prefer, take the photos yourself and send to us.

Sneak Peak…we’ll also be hosting a lecture this fall with a renown stained-glass preservationist. Stay tuned for future announcements for exact date and time.

And in Case You Missed It…

Proving that the more things change the more they stay the same…Back in the summer of 1916, Garden’s residents were celebrating the Fourth of July around Flagpole Green, organizing the Anti-Mosquito Committee to battle an outbreak, and attending The National Tennis Championship at The West Side Tennis Club. Discover what life was like “back in the day” by browsing featured issues of the Forest Hills Gardens Bulletin from that era.

Finally, what do Dale Carnegie, Burt Bacharach and Geraldine Ferraro all have in common? Well, if you haven’t checked out our popular feature
